Each year, the Ottawa Real Estate Board raises funds for the Ontario REALTORS Care® Foundation through our annual charity golf tournament, the now “$2 per member per month” campaign, and the RONA Card program. The Foundation is operated by the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA), and its mission is to collect funds raised by OREA members across Ontario and provide grants to shelter-related charities in communities throughout the province.
These charities assist those among us who do not have adequate shelter; those who may be dealing with homelessness, addiction, mental or physical illness, spousal or familial abuse, physical disability, poverty or aging. The work these organizations do is essential to the well-being of our community, but it is often difficult and stressful work, and there is never adequate funding available from public sources for equipment, staff, and infrastructure.
This year we were able to contribute over $100,000 to local charities through the REALTORS Care® Foundation. This has been the largest amount we have ever contributed to the Foundation. Well done OREB Members!
We are pleased to announce that 26 charities will be receiving a grant this month, just in time for the holidays. Each of these 26 charities was endorsed and recommended by a Member of our Board, thus ensuring that any grants awarded would go to charities supported by our Members.

Grant Application Process The Board's REALTORS Care® Committee will invite OREB Members to submit endorsement letters on behalf of shelter-related charities that they support. The process usually begins in the early spring. The Committee then reviews the endorsements to ensure that the charities meet the definition of shelter, invites those eligible for grants to apply, reviews the applications, and submits them to the Foundation on behalf of the applicants with an endorsement letter from the Board President appended. This process ensures that funds raised by Board members are granted to charities that Board members support.
Invite members to send in letters of endorsement. Deadline: Closed for 2016
The Board send out notices to all members, via MemNews and other means, inviting them to endorse a charity they have an existing relationship with, and to send an endorsement letter to the REALTORS Care® Committee at the Board before the deadline.
Committee meets to review the charities endorsed by members, and determine whether or not those charities meet the Foundation’s definition of “shelter.”
Board staff invites those eligible for grants to apply. Deadline: Closed for 2016
The charities who met the definition of a shelter are invited to submit an application to the Board. The completed applications are viewed to determine whether to recommend to the Foundation that they be awarded grants, and in what amount, based on members’ involvement, the project requiring funding, and the definition of shelter.
Board sends all the grant request applications to the Ontario REALTORS Care® Foundation
All grant applications will be sent to the Ontario REALTORS Care® Foundation by the Board, along with a signed letter of endorsement by the President of the Board. All these applications will be sent to the Foundation in time to meet their grant application deadline.
